Tip Wars

If you can partner with your school or a local business for at least a month, tip wars can be an effective way to raise money. At the check-out counter, put two jars labelled with two different options (ex. Star Wars vs. Star Trek). Customers will automatically put change into the jar that represents whatever they like the best! Make sure that you’re only using tip wars at places where people tend to buy items with cash instead of credit card. So a local fine-dining establishment isn’t the place for this fundraiser; this works best at coffee shops, fast food restaurants, or cafeterias because people usually end up with spare change after their order that they might not want to carry around with them.

There are three things that you can do to make your tip wars campaign even more successful:

1. Change out the options every day.
There are tons of people who come into a coffee shop every single morning for their daily espresso. The same thing goes for students in the cafeteria. They aren’t going to want to vote for the same thing two days in a row, so it’s up to you to switch out their options and give them a compelling new competition every morning. That means that you only want to partner with a restaurant that’s easy for you to get to because you’re going to have to visit every day!

2. List who won the previous day.
Customers will get way more invested in your tip wars campaign if you regularly list who won the day before. So if there was a battle between Star Wars and Star Trek, and Star Wars won with $23 (while Star Trek only had $12), then stick an index card next to your jars that says: “Star Wars won yesterday! Who will win today?” Customers want to know that their vote mattered, even if it’s only being acknowledged on an index card!

3. Put in a starter dollar every day.
Remember how we talked about pre-raising in the crowdfunding webinar? You want to do the same thing here! Make sure that there’s $1 in one of your jars each morning. Customers donate when they see that others have done the same. By picking only one of the jars to put $1 in, you get the competition mentality going (especially if the first customers of the day disagree with your choice!).

You might also want to get together with some friends to come up with questions (and choices) that are as hilarious as possible. While Star Wars vs. Star Trek might get some traction, who could resist throwing in for Bob Ross on this challenge?
